UNO Alumni Association and Lee Denker Scholarships

The UNO Alumni Association awards $2,500/year scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated leadership and involvement during high school. In 2022, an additional scholarship was added in honor of Lee Denker, UNO Alumni Association Executive Director from 2006–2021. The scholarship may be renewed for up to four years total. To be considered, applicants must complete an online application and meet the following criteria:

• Graduating high school senior

• Minimum ACT composite score of 24

• Either rank in the top 25 percent of their class or have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Macey Ver Hoef, Maverick Piper, Lauren Hills and Audry Srb 

Lauren Hills

Lauren Hills is a dual citizen with a rich heritage of resilience and tradition. Inspired by her grandmother’s determination and her family’s legacy in Nebraska education, Lauren is committed to continuing this tradition. She sees the University of Nebraska at Omaha as a place where she can honor her family’s roots while forging her own path. By becoming a UNO alumna, Lauren aims to make meaningful connections and contribute to her community, following in the footsteps of those who came before her. She believes in the power of shared experiences and is excited to inspire the next generation of students.

Maverick Piper, Lee Denker Scholarship Recipient

Maverick Piper grew up in Johnson, Neb., where his passion for construction and engineering began at a young age. He gained practical experience working with Piper Construction, learning valuable skills like building decks and installing drywall. In addition to his academic pursuits, Maverick is deeply committed to serving his community. With over 100 hours of volunteer work, he has contributed to projects including painting homes in various states and helping with local church events. His dedication to service reflects his strong values and desire to make a positive impact. These early experiences fueled his ambition to pursue a degree in Architectural Engineering at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Audry Srb 

Audry Srb has always valued community, leadership and staying actively involved. From student council and golf to volunteering at her youth ministry group, Audry enjoys making an impact. When she visited the University of Nebraska at Omaha, she immediately felt the same sense of community that she experienced in her volunteer work. Inspired by the welcoming environment and the passion of current students, Audry looks forward to joining a university that empowers its students and fosters a lasting sense of belonging. Her goal is to contribute to building a strong community that values diversity and lifelong connections.

Macey Ver Hoef  

Macey Ver Hoef’s connection to Omaha runs deep, as it’s the place of her earliest memories and her passion for zoology. Growing up in Northwest Iowa, Macey frequently visited Omaha, and her love for animals was sparked by visits to the Henry Doorly Zoo, especially the bird exhibits. With memorable experiences like a behind-the-scenes encounter with Birds of Prey on her 18th birthday, Omaha has always felt like home. Now, as she embarks on her academic journey at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Macey feels a deep connection to the campus, describing it as peaceful and welcoming. She looks forward to becoming an alumna and returning to her birthplace to further her education in a community she cherishes.
