ROTC's watchdog — Snoopy
Did you know Snoopy is the official ROTC Mascot?
Did you know that Snoopy was the official mascot of Earl S. Hoag Squadron, Arnold Air Society, Detachment
470? ROTC Alumni Chapter President Chuck Holderness recently came across a letter from Charles Schultz, "Peanuts" illustrator, giving ROTC the OK to use Snoopy as mascot for the Earl S. Hoag Squadron, Arnold Air Society, Detachment
470.
The approval made news in the 1960s, too. See two Gateway articles mentioning Snoopy's use by ROTC.
The letter prompted a note from Gene Kathol:
"You might recall that
I asked my artist friend, Larry Alexander, UNO BA graduate and UNL MA
graduate, to draw Snoopy for the cover of our Military Ball program. I
have one of these. Later Larry went on to become a High School Art
Teacher in Douglas County, Colorado. In 2005 or 2006 he was Teacher of the
Year in Colorado. I believe he retired from teaching in 2007.
