Distinguished Alumni Scholarships were established in 1978 for students in the honors program. The scholarships first contributors included the estate of alumna Helen Hansen, the Isaacson Trust and, later, the Omaha Scottish Rite of Free Masonry Educational Foundation.

Today, the UNO Alumni Association issues four $1,500 Distinguished Alumni Scholarships each year. They are renewable for up to four years.  Recipients must become part of the university Honors Program and maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average in honors course work.
