Montessori educator honored
The UNO Alumni Association bestowed its Citation for Alumni Achievement award upon graduate LaVonne Kopecky Plambeck Dec. 18 as part of the university’s December commencement ceremonies. Plambeck, founder of Montessori Educational Centers in Nebraska, received the award at the first-ever commencement ceremony held at Baxter Arena. See more

Study Abroad Fund broadens horizons
with classroom a hemisphere away
She ran around the soccer field like a chicken with its head cut off. The field was in Chile, a hemisphere away from Nebraska and her life at UNO, and Cassidy Cooper just couldn’t get into the flow because she didn’t know what her teammates were saying. They were speaking Spanish. Cassidy had never studied Spanish.
She wanted to walk off the field. But she stuck it out instead. And by the end of her six months in Chile last year studying global business at a university there, she’d learned enough of the language to get by and had become close friends with some of those teammates. All thanks in large measure to a scholarship from the William and Jane Fleming Study Abroad Fund at UNO. Recently, she and another recipient of that scholarship, Hannah Fus, traveled to Florida to thank the donor, Omaha native Jane Fleming, for her generous gift. Read more
More than 1,100 students graduate
It was a celebration years in the making for more than 1,100 UNO students as friends and family packed Baxter Arena for 2015's December Commencement ceremonies on Dec. 18. It was the first commencement to be held at the new home for UNO athletics and events. See more

Marlin Briscoe headed for
College Football Hall of Fame
Former Omaha University quarterback Marlin Briscoe will be among the class of 2016 inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December. The announcement was made Jan. 7 in conjunction with the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship weekend in Scottsdale, Ariz. During Briscoe’s career from 1963-67, UNO had a 27-11 record, including three conference championships. He set 22 records, including 52 touchdown passes, 4,935 yards passing, a 55 percent completion record and a career total offense record of 6,253. Later, he became the first black quarterback to start in the NFL. See more

John Neihardt, Poet Laureate in Perpetuity of Nebraska and author of Black Elk Speaks and numerous other works of prose and poetry, begins 11 days of lectures at Omaha University.. He cut his stay short when his mother, Alice Neihardt, died Feb. 6 of that year.

Marlin Briscoe becomes the first former Mav to play in a Super Bowl, helping Miami to a 14-7 win over Washington in Super Bowl VII.

UNO graduates Leland J. Holland and Paul Needham freed as Iranian hostages, ending 444 days of captivity.
