Holocaust survivor told story to save others
Sam Fried, Nebraska’s most well-known Holocaust survivor, passed away in late May. Fried, who survived Auschwitz as a teenager, spoke to thousands of students and raised money to start university programs on genocide and other atrocities.
Fried and his wife, Frances, partnered with the Louis and Frances Blumkin family of Omaha to create a professorship in Holocaust and genocide education in the department of history at UNO. He left a legacy to educate others about the atrocity he lived through. To read his story, click here.
Magazine names Thompson Center
Best Banquet Facility in reader poll
For the second consecutive year the Thompson Center was named Best Banquet Facility in B2B Omaha Magazine’s Best of B2B Winners List for 2016. That follows the facility’s selection in October as Best Reception Venue in Omaha Magazine’s Best of Omaha 2016 contest (also its second consecutive such honor).
Have you seen the Thompson Center lately? A dramatic, modern update recently was implemented throughout the facility, including new wall coverings, carpet, lighting, décor and more. An upgrade to audio-visual capabilities also was completed. Come see it for yourself — schedule a tour with Thompson Center Manager Steven Summers by calling 402-554-3368 or emailing email@example.com.

A Walk to Remember
More than 1,400 students received degrees at UNO’s May commencement, but none to greater applause than Taryn Schaaf. Seven years ago, Schaaf was in an ATV accident that damaged her spinal cord, leaving her without use of her lower body. She later began her rehabilitation at Omaha’s Quality Life Inc. (QLI), one of the nation’s most respected centers for brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation. And she began working on a degree in social work from UNO’s Grace Abbott School of Social Work. When it came time to receive her diploma, Schaaf walked across the stage to receive it with the help of an exoskeleton — and thousands of cheering fellow graduates and others inside Baxter Arena.
