For family of UNO graduates,
board chairmanship a family affair
It’s hard to top the Pearey-Durbin clan for alumni leadership at UNO.
Generation after generation after generation, the family continues to serve their alma mater — first as students, then as graduates. That reached a new level May 24 when at the 104th annual meeting of the UNO Alumni Association Board of Directors Scott Durbin was elected 2016-17 chairman of the board, leading the eight-person executive committee (pictured above).
A vice president at Harry A. Koch in Omaha, Durbin is the 93rd graduate to chair the board — but not the first in his family to do so.
Not even the second. To read more about the family tradition — and to see who else was elected to serve the board — click here
New grad looks forward to giving back
Baxter Arena was the last place Ashley Spurlock sat as a UNO undergraduate student. It is where she walked across the stage and where she received her diploma. It is also the place where she had some of her most memorable college experiences.
“I have some pretty fond memories going through the four years at UNO of all the home hockey games. Seeing it transition from the Century Link to Baxter Arena has been phenomenal,” Spurlock said. “And then especially hockey, going to the Frozen Four, being with all the students cheering them on has just been great memories going through college.”
Those memories were made possible, in part, by scholarships. “I want to thank all those that contribute to the University of Nebraska, especially at UNO,” she said. “They’ve made my time so much easier.” One day, she hopes to be able to return the favor by supporting UNO and future students. “I look forward to my full-time career coming up and being able to then give back to UNO specifically because they’ve given so much to me.”
