Association to honor Weitz
with highest award at commencement
The UNO Alumni Association will bestow its Citation for Alumni Achievement award upon UNO graduate Barbara Weitz during the university’s commencement ceremony Friday, Dec. 16, at Baxter Arena. Weitz, a 1991 UNO graduate, will become the 172nd graduate to receive the award. See more.
Chancellor receives leadership award
UNO made a strong showing at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VI conference held this week in Chicago. UNO Chancellor John Christensen was awarded the Chief Executive Leadership Award honoring outstanding leadership and service in support of education as well as contributions to campuses and communities. Also at the conference, University of Nebraska Foundation and UNO Alumni staff were recognized with seven awards for outstanding communications materials. That included three awards for UNO Magazine. UNO researcher receives $2 million grant to investigate peripheral artery disease
A $2 million grant to UNO is funding first-of-its-kind research that could have an enormous impact on the more than 8 million Americans affected by peripheral artery disease, which affects one in every 20 Americans over the age of 50. Over the next five years, Sara Myers, Biomechanics professor and assistant vice chancellor for Research and Creative Activity, will investigate whether an ankle support device improves outcomes for patients with PAD. A National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Project Grant is funding the study. See more.

Marlin 'The Magician' Briscoe inducted into College Football Hall of Fame
UNO graduate Marlin Briscoe was officially inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame during a ceremony in New York Tuesday, Dec. 6. Briscoe made waves locally and nationally as a record-breaking high-school and collegiate quarterback before going on to break the color barrier at the same position in the NFL. During a press conference hosted by the National Football Foundation, Briscoe said he was humbled by the recognition and grateful to the coaches and mentors who helped him succeed as a Maverick, both in the classroom and on the field. "The things that you learn from your collegiate experience really carries on to life, more so than the pros," Briscoe said. Read more.
