Swinging Away • Sept. 13, 2010

The UNO Alumni Association will tee off for scholarships Monday, Sept. 13, with the 30th annual Chancellor’s Scholarship Swing at Tiburon Golf Club. The association’s biggest single fundraiser each year, the Swing has raised nearly $550,000 in 15 years.

Once bookless, grad now sits on library board

At age 23, Buey Ray Tut has become the newest member of the Omaha Public Library Board — just 13 years after he and his famiy fled a war-tor Sudan, where they lived in a mud house with no running water or electricity. Now Tut, who once owned no books of his own, serves on government board overseeing 12 public libraries with a million books.Read more about the 2009 UNO graduate in an Omaha World-Herald feature story on him. Aug. 12, 1966
Alum and U.S. Air Force Major James H. Kasler promoted by TIME magazine as America's top jet ace in Vietnam — four days after he was shot down and captured by the Viet Cong. Later released, Kasler became the only man to receive the Air Force Cross three times. .
